Established in 1966, the Irish Heart Foundation (IHF) is the only national voluntary organisation in Ireland working to reduce premature death and disability from heart disease and stroke through research, education and community service. The IHF has developed various health promotion programmes including:

  • Happy Heart in the community, at school & at work
  • Slí na Sláinte

Happy Heart in the community - in the community, Happy Heart groups work to create an awareness of risk factors for heart disease. Happy Heart groups also work to encourage healthier lifestyles. Activities include dissemination of information, public talks, information stands, and the promotion of healthier choices in pubs and restaurants throughout the 'Happy Heart Eat Out' campaign, and support for Irish Heart week. Happy Heart in schools - Happy Heart has developed four programmes in primary schools and these are as follows:

  1. Action for Life provides a valuable, practical and easy to understand resource pack on activity in the classroom
  2. Action for Everybody complements the Action for Life programme and shows teachers how to adapt Action for Life for everybody
  3. Bizzy Break is a series of activities for the classroom designed to get pupils moving on the spot. The activities focus on strength, flexibility and aerobic fitness, and can be completed in ten minutes at their desk using the available space.
  4. GetKids on the Go is a programme designed for parents and teachers to get children involved in some type of physical activity to encourage lifelong participation, and also to improve health.

Happy Heart at work is a programme designed to assist any individual or working group to plan, implement and maintain a healthy lifestyle programme for employees in the workplace.

For further information on any of these programmes, feel free to contact IHF on 01 6685001, by email or visit their website.
